Oxford's First Responders Exhibit Opens
The Twitchell-Rowland Homestead Museum opens its new exhibit “Oxford’s First Responders” on Sunday, September 18, from 2-4 p.m. The histories of the town’s three fire companies, the Oxford Ambulance Corps and the Oxford Junior Fire Corps are presented through vintage photographs and news clippings. Past and present members of these organizations are especially welcome at this event, as well as the general public.
The museum is located at 60 Towner Lane, of Route 67 in Oxford. Admission is free.

Also featured at the Homestead is a collection of antique fire marks loaned by Peter Faber of Winsted. Fire marks are colorful metal plaques embossed with the emblems of insurance companies issued during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. The plaques were fastened to the front of insured buildings to guide the insurance company’s fire brigade to the burning building. In the United States, where volunteer fire companies were common, insurance companies often supported these organizations and offered a stipend to the first brigade to reach the blaze.
Peach shortcake with all the trimmings, including Rich Farm peaches and cream ice cream will be served. Weather permitting, guests are invited to enjoy their refreshments on the museum grounds.
