5 Ridgefield Police Officers Recognized After Driver of Stolen Car Crashed Into Vehicles

Ridgefield Police Officers Shimko, Gjodesen, Caba, Samoskevich and Lt. Platt were all awarded for their work.

RIDGEFIELD, CT-- Five Ridgefield Police officers were recognized for their professionalism and teamwork after the driver of a stolen vehicle crashed into several cars, according to the Ridgefield Police Commission meeting minutes.

On January 3, 2016 police received calls that a motor vehicle on Route 35 was speeding, passing and crashing into vehicles. An investigation revealed that the vehicle was stolen.

Officers Shimko fielded numerous calls to Ridgefield police headquarters and "he calmly transmitted the information to the officers on patrol," Chairman George Kain explained at the presentation. Officer Romero spotted the vehicle near Copps Hill Plaza and alerted other officers on patrol with the make and model of the vehicle.

Kain said that Lt. Platt and Officer Gjodesen responded and after the driver crashed into one of the vehicles, he fled on foot. The suspect attacked Lt. Platt but he and Officer Gjodesen gained control of him.

Meanwhile, Officer Caba and Officer Samoskevich assisted motorists who had been struck by the stolen vehicle and checked occupants for injuries, Kain said.

"All officers worked together, remained calm and communicated with each other to keep the public safe," Chairman Kain said.

Each of the officers received a blue and white bar on their uniforms.
