Babe Ruth Softball Excels In Tournament

The girls played a benefit tournament in Princeton last weekend.

This past weekend, Ridgefield Babe Ruth Softball sent its 10U, 12U, 14U and 16U teams to Princeton, NJ to compete in the 18th Annual Hopewell Bad Girls Benefit Softball Tournament.

The Ridgefield Rebels 12U team advanced all the way to the division's finals out of 24 participating teams, ultimately losing 11-4 against the tournament champion, Abington Angels. The 12U team played its way into the finals in 97-degree heat on solid defense, strong hitting and smart baserunning. The team was paced by Megan Hyatt, the Phelan sisters (Claire and Leah), Chrissy Casazza, Alexa Dragon and Eden Bravery.

The 10U Rebels team lost in Sunday's quarterfinal game versus the Hamilton Hurricanes, but Babe Ruth Softball's youngest division's skills continue to improve on a daily basis. The team was led by Ryen Fujitani on the mound, Jacqueline Nadel at shortstop, Kylie Formisano behind the plate,  Taylor Alward on the mound and at third base, Kendall Rogoff, Hannah Kendrick and Isabel Papa patrolling the outfield and Giuliana Tripuzzi at second.

Two 14U teams also traveled to Princeton. The Rebels 14U Assault lost in the semifinals, 8-4, to the eventual tournament champion NJ Breakers while the Rebels 14U Attack lost its semifinal game, 5-4, to the Hopewell Renegades. The 14U teams were piloted by Amanda Scammon, Morgan Sanchez, Felicia Nadel and Jasmin Harrison.

At the 16U division, both teams played well but lost in their semifinal games.

The Rebels 16U Thunder lost, 9-5, to the Pocono Pride, the tournament champions. The Rebels 16U Lightning lost to the host Hopewell Renegades, 12-4. The 16U teams were captained by a pair of Morgans—Begos and Nadel—who were both starting catchers and centerfielders. The duo was ably supported by Abby Begos, Marianne Staudt (playing all weekend with a pulled quadricep), Kathryn Eckhoff, Katherine Dinisi, Amelia Romero, Taylor Dragon, Erin Bamback and Theresa Mackey.

Babe Ruth Softball resumes its Fairfield County Fastpitch Softball League schedule this week with games for all teams.

Cary Nadel is president of Ridgefield Babe Ruth Softball.
