Boys Lacrosse Pounds Danbury, 21-3

Captain Mike Galione scored five goals as the Tigers rebounded from a subpar performance against McMahon.

Led by captain Mike Galione's five goals, the Ridgefield High School boys lacrosse team rebounded from a poor outing to rout Danbury, 21-3, Wednesday afternoon.

In their last game, the Tigers struggled to get past an average McMahon team, 7-6, but they left nothing to chance against Danbury.

Andrew Buckavage scored twice early in the game to spark Ridgefield, which registered eight goals in the first period and led, 8-1, after the opening 12 minutes.

Coach Roy Colsey could be heard from the sideline imploring his troops, saying, "Don't waste your time being mediocre" and "I don't care what Blue is doing, only about what we need to be doing."

With Ridgefield (10-2, 9-1 FCIAC) leading 16-1 at halftime, Colsey used his younger players in the second half.

He was pleased with the Tigers' efforts, but said, "Now we have to be prepared to work for four quarters the rest of the year, because we play good teams and the playoffs are just around the corner."

Ridgefield plays at rival Wilton on Thursday, then crosses the New York border on Saturday to face neighboring lacrosse powerhouse John Jay High School on Saturday.

While Saturday's game is a non-league contest, it should be a good measuring stick—John Jay is 15th in the nation, according to Lax Power's computerized rankings.

Ridgefield, the defending FCIAC champion, is ranked third in Connecticut behind Darien and Fairfield Prep.

"We worked on our sets all game long, trying to get them right," Galione said. "As a leader, I try to give them something of my heart and let the other players know that if we work hard we can have fun."

Aaron Mathias and Sean Riley each added three goals for Ridgefield, with Scott Aidan and Jack Barrow chipping in with two apiece.

The other Tigers' goals were scored by Ian Vasquez, Jack Philbin, Kurt Mueller and Eric Scala.

For Danbury, Brian Sih scored two goals and Mike Pristouris one.
