Cafe Svago Still Open, at Least Today...
The downtown coffee shop's ultimate fate remains uncertain.
A regular customer stopped into Cafe Svago early this afternoon, and owner Trish Arata greeted him with a grin.
"How are you? I wasn't sure you'd be here," he said, giving her a hug.
She's here—the New Year has come and gone, and Arata's downtown coffee shop remains open, despite word spreading that Svago might be closing this month.
"I think I want to fight for my store," she said this afternoon.
She is some months delinquent on her rent due to a marked decline in business from the previous year and continues to play phone tag with commercial landlord Urstadt Biddle Properties. Until things are resolved, Arata is running her cafe one day at a time, she said.
Cafe Svago has been in its Main Street spot for the past four years.
