<a href="https://japansocietyfc.org/" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">Japan Society of Fairfield County </a>(JSFC) invites the public to its annual Aki Matsuri (fall festival) on Saturday, September 19, 2026 from 1:00 to 4:00 pm on Jesup Green,<a href="https://www.google.com/maps/search/20+Jesup+Road,+Westport+CT?entry=gmail&amp;source=g" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank"> 20 Jesup Road, Westport CT</a> (next to the Westport library). The Japanese marketplace vendors will open at 12:30.  Admission is free. Rain date: Sunday, September 20. 
The family-friendly festival will feature taiko drum performances, a Japanese folktale dramatization, martial arts, ikebana flower arranging, calligraphy, J-pop dance, traditional Obon dancing, and Japanese-related activities. Obon is a major festival that historically welcomed the spirits of ancestors but is now widely celebrated with family reunions and audience participation in folk dances.

Beginning Tai Chi (Yang Long Form) Tai Chi, described as meditation in motion is a centuries old Chinese discipline used for health, relaxation, and meditation. Relaxation and inner calm and strength are emphasized. It can be practiced by anyone, regardless of age, sex or athletic ability. Tai Chi is considered a healing exercise. Taught by Gwen Roman (Wednesday evening) and Rod Barfield (Friday morning).
* Gwen Roman has extensive experience in the Arts of Tai Chi and Jin Shin Jyutsu. She has extensive experience teaching Tai Chi and trains with Myles MacVane. Other teachers include Alex Dong, Master Bing, and Wang Feng-Ming. Tai Chi Strength and Balance Exercises
Tai Chi Strength and Balance (Beginner): the Natural Way to Promote Health This class is a meditation in motion and a full body workout combined, all done standing (no mat). This first class consists of 35 basic Tai Chi exercises designed to promote better health, stress relief, balance and coordination, concentration, and internal organ massage. These exercises are based on Step by Step Tai Chi: the Natural Way to Strength and Healing by Master Lam Kam Chuen. Please have a set of 2 or 3 pound weights and a water bottle available. Ridgefield Historical Society

The Sept. 15 Ridgefield History Club meeting will focus on a short stretch of Ridgefield that has held more than its share of Ridgefield history.

Olmstead Lane, being proposed as a new town Historic District (an added West Lane district is also up for consideration), was home to many Olmsteads, as well as Smiths and other early Ridgefielders, but it’s also been a place where town officials of the 20th Century made their homes, and where a man who rescued some of the most renowned artists and writers from the Nazis once lived. It’s also where screen actors enjoyed gardening and a pop star found a refuge for a few years.
Jack Sanders, town historian and resident of Olmstead Lane for more that 54 years, will give an illustrated talk about the street he calls home (where the first town historian, Dick Venus, also lived for many years) at the 10 a.m. meeting on Tuesday, Sept. 15, at the Scott House, 4 Sunset Lane.
Ridgefield History Club is an informal gathering where participants are encouraged to take part in the conversation. It’s presented by the Ridgefield Historical Society and is free; reservations are requested online here because space is limited.
Each session is recorded and cataloged in the Historical Society’s archive to preserve these stories for future generations. The program is also streamed live on Facebook and uploaded to our YouTube channel. Everyone is invited, just bring your curiosity and your love of history. Some attend every month, while others join when a topic holds special meaning for them. Longtime Ridgefield residents and newcomers alike are welcome. This free program is a wonderful way to connect with others and discover new insights into our town’s heritage.

Studio Knitting for Beginners and Continuing
Keep your mind sharp by learning a new skill and keep your fingers nimble by keeping them moving. This open-knitting format is for both beginners and those who want to continue furthering their knitting skills. The participant will learn the basic stitches and develop skills in maintaining an even tension in the piece. The instructor will provide practice needles and practice yarn until the participant determines a project. After the selection of a project, the participant will purchase the necessary supplies. Projects have included knitting a scarf, sweater, blanket, and handbag. Instructor Lizabeth Doty, a professional educator for over 45 years, has taught some of her hobbies, calligraphy and knitting, to students of all ages for years. Join these fun, productive classes. She is a former teacher. Class size limited. Makeup date, if needed, is added to the end of the session.

Zumba, a high energy fitness workout, combines Latin and internatonal music with dance moves, creating a fun and effective workout. It incorporates elements of aerobic, interval and resistance training, maximizing calorie burning and cardiovascular benefits. Move to the rhythm of salsa, flamenco, merengue and other global beats. Wear sneakers and bring a water bottle. Instructor Yolima Solano (Tuesdays at 6 pm) is licensed in Zumba ®, a life long dancer originally from Colombia, who enjoys teaching Zumba ® in the area.  LaBlast Fitness ® Cardio Dance Workout with Light Weights You will get your heart rate up and sweat a bit with this aerobic workout created by Louis Van Amstel of Dancing with the Stars. LaBlast® is a partner-free, simple, low impact, safe, cardio / ballroom dance workout for all levels. Some exercises use optional light weights. There is no mat. It's fun and energizing. Beginners are encouraged to attend. Wear sneakers and bring light hand weights (if you have them) and a water bottle. Instructor Denise Nethercott started ballroom dancing in 2011 and has successfully competed as an amateur ballroom dancer with Fred Astaire Dance Studios. She is an Open Gold level dancer with numerous accomplishments. Denise's mission is to combine her passion for ballroom dance with her passion for physical fitness. LaBlast® is a fun, safe exercise program that combines the love of dance with the need to move our bodies. Denise became a certified LaBlast® Fitness instructor in 2019 and started Dance Fit with Denise in 2021. More bio on website.

The class is good for beginners, intermediate and advanced participants. Modifications are always offered in a non-intimidating environment. Weights are encouraged, (bring your own) but not required. Please have available weights of your choice, towel, mat and water. Registration is now open for Music on the Hill's after school music programs for kids! 
Children's Chorus is open to all kids in grades 2 through 6 who love to sing! Rehearsals are Thursdays from 4:00 to 5:15 p.m., starting October 1. In Children’s Chorus, children build a musical foundation through singing. Children will learn vocal technique and breath support, music and rhythm reading, pitch and listening skills, and more. Through being part of the ensemble, children will build confidence, and skills in teamwork and leadership. 
Cultural Drum &amp; Fun is open to children of all ages, including young children with a caregiver. Sessions are Wednesdays from 4:15 to 5:00 p.m., starting September 23. Cultural Drum &amp; Fun is an opportunity for youth, family and friends to explore the wonderful world of music through drumming. Authentic instruments from Africa, Brazil and beyond add to the cultural and musical education and enhance the experience!
