This illustrated talk will describe law enforcement during Ridgefield’s first two centuries, the arrival of the state police and how they handled major crimes. It will focus on two celebrity Ridgefield troopers, John Kelly and Leo Carroll, who rose to the top ranks of the CT State Police, and will include readings of two stories from Jack’s book, Wicked Ridgefield, that tell how Carroll and Kelly each solved major local crimes a century ago.
Jack Sanders is a Fairfield County native who graduated from Fairfield Prep and Holy Cross College, spent nearly 50 years as an editor and writer for The Ridgefield Press, and has written 20 books on many aspects of Ridgefield history. Named town historian in 2025, he lives with his wife, Sally, vice president of the Ridgefield Historical Society, in a 240-year-old farmhouse in Ridgefield.
