Dr. Mark Schenker, formerly of Yale College, returns to the Ridgefield Library this fall for a three-part online lecture series on Literary Detectives.

The series kicks off on Wednesday, October 14, at 7:00 pm with A Brief Introduction to Detective Fiction, where we’ll look at the cultural conditions that gave rise to detective fiction in late 19th-century England. Dr. Schenker will discuss the preeminent example of a literary detective, Arthur Conan Doyle’s Sherlock Holmes, with references to Doyle’s forebears: America’s Edgar Allan Poe and Britain’s William Russell. Optional reading: The Hound of the Baskervilles (1902).

Please register for the Zoom link.

Dr Schenker will hold additional lectures on October 28th and November 11th. They will be held online via Zoom, and Mark will be available following each lecture for questions and comments from patrons, who can contact him by email.

This program is part of the Library’s 2026 Scholarly Series, Whodunits, Locked Rooms & Amateur Sleuths: Investigating the World of Mysteries, sponsored by the Friends of the Ridgefield Library.
