Coronavirus Deaths Climb In CT, Nationally

CONNECTICUT — The death rate for coronavirus cases continues to climb nationwide and in Connecticut, as public health efforts to control the spread of the delta variant have had limited success.

In Connecticut, there were 25 more deaths attributed to COVID-19 in the past week, according to the most recent data from the Department of Public Health. The state death toll stands at 8,355.

Across the United States, the daily coronavirus death rate has been about 1,100 since March, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

A University of Michigan model forecasts 98,000 Americans will succumb to the virus by the start of December. The simulation projects the daily rate of death will climb to about 1,400 a day by mid-September, then decline slowly. If correct, it would bring the nationwide death toll to nearly 730,000.

It is important to note that the model is based upon current vaccination rates, which faltered both locally and across the country since the start of the summer. The vaccination nationwide rate has increased about 80 percent over the past month, as fear of the delta variant has grown, along with vaccination requirements in schools and businesses.

The CDC is forecasting the number of weekly COVID-19 deaths to reach about 11,200 by the beginning of October.

In Connecticut, the number of residents hospitalized with the coronavirus has climbed by two beds overnight, to 380.

There were another 788 new cases confirmed yesterday, from 21,649 tests, yielding a daily positivity rate of 3.64 percent. There have been 369,920 cases of COVID-19 reported since the start of the pandemic
