Driver Charged in Crash That Killed UConn Student From Ridgefield
Two UConn students were killed in the crash in Tolland County in September 2015.

COLUMBIA, CT - A 19-year-old woman who was driving the car that collided with a tractor-trailer in September killing two UConn students turned herself in to police Saturday, police said. Hannah Marguerite Schmidt, 19, of Hebron is charged with two counts of negligent homicide and is also facing a stop sign violation.

The two students killed in the crash were identified as Alana Ferrante, 19, of South Windsor and Ryan Meegan, 19, of Ridgefield. Ferrante was a a pre-kinesiology major who recently transferred from Central Connecticut State University while Meegan was a pre-teaching major, a mentor in UConn’s First Year Experience (FYE) program and was involved in competitive soccer and rugby groups on campus.

Both Meegan and Ferrante were pronounced dead at the scene. Ferrante was the passenger in the front seat and Meegan was sitting in the backseat.
Schmidt also suffered serious injuries in the crash. She was released on a $1,000 non-surety bond and was given a court date of April 27.
