Press release from the Ridgefield Playhouse:
July 26 2020
Rock buffs can take a tour through the Canyon with the bands that created the California Sound when Echo In The Canyon returns to the big screen at The Ridgefield Playhouse on Friday, July 31 at 8:30pm as part of the Pepsi Rock Series powered by Xfinity and Cohen & Wolf, P.C. Movie Series. Echo In The Canyon celebrates the explosion of popular music that came out of LA’s Laurel Canyon in the mid-60s as folk went electric and The Byrds, The Beach Boys, Buffalo Springfield and The Mamas and the Papas gave birth to the California Sound. It was a moment (1965 to 1967) when bands came to LA to emulate The Beatles and Laurel Canyon emerged as a hotbed of creativity and collaboration for a new generation of musicians who would soon put an indelible stamp on the history of American popular music. Featuring Jakob Dylan (The Wallflowers), the film explores the beginnings of the Laurel Canyon music scene. Dylan uncovers never-before-heard personal details behind the bands and their songs and how that music continues to inspire today. Echo in the Canyon contains candid conversations and performances with Brian Wilson, Ringo Starr, Michelle Phillips, Eric Clapton, Stephen Stills, David Crosby, Graham Nash, Roger McGuinn and Jackson Browne.
The film also gives perspective from today’s artists who have been carrying on the musical legacy of the Laurel Canyon sound. Tom Petty, in his final filmed interview, along with Beck, Fiona Apple, Cat Power, Regina Spektor, Jade Castrinos and Norah Jones share their influences of the sounds that are felt in their music today. The film also includes a performance of the Mamas & the Papas’ “Go Where You Wanna Go,” with Jakob Dylan and Jade Castrinos, The Beach Boys’ “In My Room” featuring Fiona Apple, The Association’s “Never My Love” featuring Norah Jones among many other classics.
