Pickleball may have an unusual name, but it's a sport taking the country by storm. Invented by a Washingtonian congressman in 1965, pickleball was named after the congressman’s dog, Pickles. Combining the elements of tennis, badminton, and table tennis, pickleball is played on a smaller court than tennis and is played with a hard paddle and wiffle ball. With a smaller court and a slower moving ball, pickleball is a great alternative to tennis for children and seniors.
“It’s a fun and east sport to learn,” stated Janice Pauly, a pickleball instructor at Ridgefield Parks & Recreation. To show people just how entertaining the sport is, the Ridgefield Parks & Recreation will be hosting two Pickleball Open Houses. The one on September 7th is open to anyone ages 8 and up and the one on September 8th is for adults only. “Come swing a paddle with us and enjoy one of the fastest growing sports in America,” added Ms. Pauly.
