George J. Hefferon, 84, of Ridgefield, Passed Away

Mr. Hefferon was a member and former president of the Ridgefield Mens Club.

RIDGEFIELD, CT — George J. Hefferon, 84, of Ridgefield, husband of Sheila (Kissane) Hefferon, died on Friday, April 22, 2016 at Danbury Hospital.

Mr. Hefferon was born in The Bronx, NY, August 16, 1931, a son of the late George and Mae (Fitzgibbon) Hefferon. He attended Power Memorial School of Manhattan, received his Bachelor's degree from Iona College and his Master's degree from Fordham University. Mr. Hefferon studied under Victor Hess, a Nobel Prize scientist.

A nuclear physicist and optical computer scientist, Mr. Hefferon was employed with the Perkin Elmer Corporation for twenty years where he was a Systems Engineer in the Hubble Space Telescope project. He was a U.S. Army peacetime veteran. Mr. Hefferon was active in community affairs, including in computer training for the physically disabled for BIPED and DATAHR.

A resident of Ridgefield for the past forty nine years, Mr. Hefferon was a member and former president of the Ridgefield Mens Club. Interested in astronomy, Mr. Hefferon was the founder of the Star Park of Ridgefield and a member of St. Mary Parish where he served as an usher at the Sunday 10:30 AM Mass.

In addition to his wife Sheila of sixty three years, he is survived by four sons, George J. Hefferon Jr. and his wife, Marguerite of So. Salem, NY, James S. Hefferon and his wife, Lynne of Jericho, VT, Thomas M. Hefferon and his wife, Elizabeth of McLean, VA and Dennis J. Hefferon and his wife, Kathi Kinloch of Pompano Beach, FL; three daughters, Mary Jean Mangione of Watertown, CT, Theresa A. Kamradt and her husband, Jeffrey of Southington, CT and Noreen E. Thomas and her husband, James of Northboro, MA; eighteen grandchildren, five great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, Mr. Hefferon was predeceased by a sister, Geraldine Clarke and by a brother, Edward Hefferon.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Monday, April 25, 2016 at 10:15 AM at St. Mary Church; 55 Catoonah Street, Ridgefield. Interment will follow in St. Mary Cemetery, Ridgefield. The family will receive friends on Sunday, April 24, 2016 from 2:00 to 5:00 PM in the Kane Funeral Home; 25 Catoonah Street, Ridgefield.
