Home Safety Tips From the Ridgefield Police Department

Keep these in mind if you are planning on traveling this holiday season.

The Ridgefield police department reminds residents of some basic home safety tips for those traveling this holiday season. Earlier this month, a rash of burglaries was reported in town.

For your and your family’s safety, remember these tips:

  • Do not post on social media that you are going away
  • Ask a trusted neighbor to watch your home while you are away
  • Activate your alarm system (if you have one) when you leave home
  • Mail and newspaper deliveries should be stopped or arrangements made for someone to pick them up
  • Have exterior lighting with motion sensors
  • Set timers to turn on some of your interior lights. This will give the appearance that someone is home
  • Make arrangements to have your driveway and walkway cleared in the event of a snowstorm
  • Stop by the police department and fill out a vacant premise form. This will put your contact information on file in the event an incident occurs at your residence while you are away and we need to contact you
  • Make sure all doors and windows are locked when you leave, even if you have an alarm system
