Inside "The Factory": A Spring Writing Experience for Imaginative Minds

This spring, Muse Squad invites young writers to step through the factory gates and into a world of pure imagination with our newest creative writing course, “The Factory.” Inspired by Roald Dahl’s beloved novel Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, this course transforms the classroom into a space of invention, curiosity, and limitless storytelling possibility.
Dahl’s Charlie and the Chocolate Factory has captivated generations of readers with its unforgettable characters, whimsical settings, and sharp humor. From the mysterious chocolatier Willy Wonka to the gleaming chocolate river and gravity-defying inventions inside the factory walls, Dahl’s story celebrates creativity, resilience, and the power of imagination. In “The Factory,” students will use the novel as both a literary touchstone and a launchpad exploring how Dahl builds fantastical worlds, crafts memorable characters, and balances humor with meaningful themes.
Each class begins with a brief review of the previous week’s discoveries before introducing new vocabulary and writing techniques through engaging, thoughtfully designed handouts. Students collaborate at the chalkboard to brainstorm imaginative responses to lesson prompts: inventing their own candy creations, designing original factory rooms, or dreaming up characters who might earn a golden ticket of their own. Through close analysis of selected excerpts from the novel, participants will explore how Dahl uses language, tone, and surprise to enchant readers.
The heart of each session is dedicated creative writing time. Students spread out around the room, immersing themselves in quiet free-writing as they develop stories inspired by the week’s themes. Whether crafting a new fantastical invention, imagining an entirely different factory, or writing from the perspective of a minor character, students are encouraged to take bold creative risks. Classes conclude with a supportive sharing circle, where participants read their work aloud and celebrate one another’s ideas. Optional take-home enrichment activities help extend the magic beyond the classroom.
The session culminates in a final reading and reception, where students proudly share their polished pieces with family and friends, creating a joyful celebration of the worlds they have created.
The course will be held from March 11 through May 27 at Ridgefield Parks & Recreation (195 Danbury Road, Ridgefield, CT).
Children aged 8–12 will meet Wednesdays from 4:45–6:15pm, and teens 13+ will meet Wednesdays from 6:30–8:00pm.
