Is public safety worth 94 cents a day?

Our ceiling fan started smoking the other day and giving off a very horrible toxic smell. I called for help and our first responders came. Every time my elderly mother-in-law falls in her assisted living apartment, the first responders come over. They don’t ask questions, they just help, regardless of party affiliation, race, religion or anything else. It is imperative for our town to have an up-to-date and functioning fire department and police department to benefit all of us. We are currently not in compliance with proper safety codes for our first responders. It is not fair that we ask them to risk their lives to go into burning buildings and then deprive them of the proper hazmat decontamination that is necessary for them to decontaminate properly within the prescribed timeframe. If it were my child who was the first responder, I would want to make sure that at a minimum they can properly decontaminate so they don’t risk getting cancer. Plain and simple, we are going to be compelled to upgrade to code and the longer we wait, the higher the costs. The amount of money it will actually increase our taxes is truly minimal. For example, if your annual property tax is $10,000 now, your yearly taxes will go up by approximately $343 a year: that's 94 cents a day. These figures do not include discounts available to seniors and those in the military. At this point, we really don't have a choice. Our current buildings are in violation, and they are unsafe for our first responders. I already voted YES and would encourage you to too. Please vote YES for our Public Safety Building on Nov. 4th.
