RHS Girls Lose Tennis, Softball, Lax

State title bids ended for three Ridgefield teams on Wednesday.

Lacrosse

The Ridgefield High School girls lacrosse team's hopes of making a run in the CIAC Division II state tournament ended quickly, as the Tigers were soundly beaten by No. 10 seed Staples, 19-6, Wednesday afternoon in Westport.

The qualifying game was postponed from Tuesday due to the severe thunderstorms that struck the Fairfield area.

Staples (12-6) will play at No. 7 seed New Milford on Thursday in a first-round contest.

Ridgefield, the No. 23 seed, concludes the year at 7-10-1 under first-year coach Michelle Ralph. This year's record is an improvement over last season's 5-11.

Softball

The season ended for the Ridgefield High School softball teamed Wednesday with a 3-0 loss to No. 9 seed Cheshire in the first round of the CIAC Class LL state tournament.

The Tigers, who qualified as the No. 24 seed, finished the year at 8-13.

After starting the season 2-6, Ridgefield won five in a row to improve to 7-6. A bunch of subsequent losses required the team's 5-3 win at Greenwich in the final regular-season contest on May 20 just to get into the state tournament.

Brittany Orcutt scattered six for the Rams (18-6), who face No. 8 West Haven on the road in the second round today at 3:30 p.m.

Tennis

The Ridgefield girls' tennis team was swept by No. 5 seed Staples, 7-0, Wednesday in the first round of the CIAC Class L state tournament in Westport.

The 21st-seeded Tigers finished the year at 11-8. Staples improved to 17-2 and will play in the quarterfinals on Thursday.
