State title bids ended for three Ridgefield teams on Wednesday.
Lacrosse
The Ridgefield High School girls lacrosse team's hopes of making a run in the CIAC Division II state tournament ended quickly, as the Tigers were soundly beaten by No. 10 seed Staples, 19-6, Wednesday afternoon in Westport.
The qualifying game was postponed from Tuesday due to the severe thunderstorms that struck the Fairfield area.
Staples (12-6) will play at No. 7 seed New Milford on Thursday in a first-round contest.
Ridgefield, the No. 23 seed, concludes the year at 7-10-1 under first-year coach Michelle Ralph. This year's record is an improvement over last season's 5-11.
Softball
The season ended for the Ridgefield High School softball teamed Wednesday with a 3-0 loss to No. 9 seed Cheshire in the first round of the CIAC Class LL state tournament.
The Tigers, who qualified as the No. 24 seed, finished the year at 8-13.
After starting the season 2-6, Ridgefield won five in a row to improve to 7-6. A bunch of subsequent losses required the team's 5-3 win at Greenwich in the final regular-season contest on May 20 just to get into the state tournament.
Brittany Orcutt scattered six for the Rams (18-6), who face No. 8 West Haven on the road in the second round today at 3:30 p.m.
