Ridgefield Garden Club Member Event

Tom Christopher, a graduate of the NY Botanical Garden School of Professional Horticulture, presented alternatives to traditional lawns.

Tom Christopher spoke to Ridgefield Garden Club members about his interest and research into designing and establishing more sustainable laws. For almost a decade he has been designing and planting fine fescue lawns that flourish with only a couple of mowings a year and limited fertilization, as well as lawns that are designed to be family and dog friendly. Lawns occupy an area roughly as big as the states of Virginia, Connecticut, Delaware, and Rhode Island combined. This is the area where Tom has focused his time and energy- making the American lawn a more environmentally healthy and biologically diverse condition. He offered many examples of fescues, grasses, sedges and plants to consider replacing typical lawn grasses to suit all horticultural styles and uses.
