Ridgefield Garden Club Springtime Gardening Programs with Jesse Lee
Flowers, Plants and Trees- Jesse Lee preschoolers learn how to plant vegetables and trees, and create a beautiful floral arrangement.
Ridgefield Garden Club members joined a Jesse Lee class of preschoolers and taught them how to make Tussie Mussies. A Tussie Mussie is a small arrangement of flowers and herbs with symbolic meanings. It was made popular by England’s Queen Victoria to provide a pleasing fragrance at home and in public and private gatherings. The Jesse Lee preschoolers did a marvelous job arranging the flowers and herbs to create a beautiful arrangement. They were so proud of their creations and eager to gift it to a very special person in their life.
In May the Club enjoyed two events at Jesse Lee. During Spring Fling youngsters from the school and community stopped by the RGC tent to select a cucumber plant for planting at home. The children topped the biodegradable pot with soil, watered it and learned how to plant it. They received instructions on taking care of their new found vegetable plant. For many children it was their first chance to start their own vegetable garden.
Later in May there was another event at Jesse Lee for preschoolers. This time the preschoolers were given a wild cherry tree whip to plant. Once again, they potted it, learned how to water it, and were looking forward to watching it grow. They left with a great book on trees to enjoy now and in the future, and their own watering can to keep the plant growing.
