Ridgefield Girls Volleyball Sweeps Greenwich

Tigers advance to Class LL quarterfinals after dethroning the defending state champion Cardinals

There will be a new girls volleyball state champion in Class LL this season.

No. 5 seed Ridgefield made sure of that Saturday, dethroning 12th-seeded Greenwich 25-16, 25-22, 25-9 in a second-round match behind the all-round play of Megan Kirchoff.

Kirchoff had nine kills, including the 700th of her career, and added nine digs and 10 service points. Morgan Hyland chipped in with 12 service points and 28 assists for the Tigers and Karryn Christiansen contributed 13 digs.

Greenwich (16-6) made it interesting in the second game, rallying from a 14-6 deficit to tie the set at 17-17, but never gained the lead.

Ridgefield (19-3), which lost to Darien in the FCIAC finals, will take on either, Southington or Danbury in the quarterfinals on Tuesday.
