Ridgefield Historic District Czars Conditionally Approve Main Street Project

Ridgefield's Historic District Commission approved a Main Street roof project and a Barlow Mountain Road fence replacement.

RIDGEFIELD, CT — The Historic District Commission unanimously gave conditional approval July 13 to proposed roof modifications and exterior changes at a Main Street home and approved a fence replacement at another property during a special meeting and site visit.

The commission voted 5-0 to conditionally approve plans for renovations at 323 Main St., where architect Doug MacMillan presented proposed changes on behalf of the homeowners. The project includes extending the rear roof to connect with the main house, along with several exterior modifications.

MacMillan told commissioners the front of the house would receive a more traditional front door, the removal of porch railings, the addition of a porch column and the elimination of one porch step. The proposal also calls for replacing French doors on one side of the porch, removing a second-floor dormer and adding new windows. He said additional exterior changes may be presented to the commission at a future meeting.

At the rear of the property, the proposal includes extending the house about 4 feet on the north side, adding stone veneer to part of the garage and replacing one of three garage doors with a standard entry door. MacMillan said the project would connect the upper floors of the main house and garage, which are currently separated.

Vice Chair Sean O'Kane questioned the proposed roof design, asking whether more of the existing roof would be visible from Main Street and why the connecting section used a different roof pitch. MacMillan said the design was intended to match the main house roof but agreed to revise the plans so the connecting section's roof pitch would instead match the garage roof. He said updated drawings would be provided to commissioners.

Following the discussion, O'Kane made a motion, seconded by Commissioner Harriet Hanlon, to conditionally approve the roof plans subject to commissioners reviewing and agreeing to the revised drawings. The motion passed 5-0.

The commission also unanimously approved an application to replace a fence at 11 Barlow Mountain Road. Chair Dan O'Brien said commissioners had received the application and plans before the meeting, and no questions were raised before the 5-0 vote approving the project as submitted.

Commissioners also voted 5-0 to approve minutes from meetings held May 21, June 8, June 18 and June 23 before adjourning the special meeting and site visit at 6:19 p.m.
