Ridgefield Police Chief John Roche Dies

RIDGEFIELD, CT — Less than one week into his retirement, former Ridgefield Police Chief John Roche has died.

The Ridgefield Police Department announced their long-time leader's death in a release though social media, saying in part, "It is with heavy hearts that the men and women of the Ridgefield Police Department announce the death of Chief John Roche. The Chief dedicated his life to law enforcement. We marched behind him proudly. Chief Roche was a police officer for nearly forty years. His exemplary leadership and devotion showed us the right way to serve."

A cause of death has not been released.

Roche, who began his career as a patrol officer in Ridgefield in 1980, last week made public knowledge that his retirement would be effective Aug. 24. He had been on medical leave for the two months leading up to his retirement.

Roche was appointed to the Detective Division in 1983, and named Ridgefield Officer of the Year that same year. He was promoted to sergeant in 1986 and lieutenant in 1990. Roche made captain in 1991 and major in 1999. In 2008, he was named the department's fifth chief of police.

Major Steve Brown was appointed by Roche to run the department during his medical leave of absence, and will remain in charge until a permanent chief is found.

"The members and staff of the Ridgefield Police Department and the Ridgefield Police Commission offer our condolences and prayers to the Chief’s family," officials wrote on Facebook. "Chief - You were a great leader, a great cop and a great man. We will miss your smile, your laughter and your stories. Your door was always open and you truly cared about each and every one of us. You wore the uniform with pride and only did great things. You were proud of us, as we were of you. You will be greatly missed. Chief, may you Rest In Peace."
