The Ridgefield football team will conduct the second of its four preseason scrimmages on Wednesday at home against Brookfield at 5 p.m.

That will be followed by a scrimmage at Staples at Sept. 5 (9 a.m) and another one against Stratford at home on Sept 9. (5 p.m.). Ridgefield opens the regular season on Sept. 16 at Greenwich.

"Our offense and defense are practically all installed,’’ coach Kevin Callahan said last week, "but we aren’t ready for the start of the season. We still have a lot of work to do and a lot to learn."

Junior Conner Rowe started the final three games of last season at quarterback and figures to have a leg up on the starting job this year.

"He’s an all-time football player,’’ Callahan said. "He trains all year round.’’

Callahan saw Rowe’s potential at the end of last year and moved then-quarterback Griffin McCarty to receiver to give Rowe the snaps, getting him acclimated to the position.

Rowe’s primary target is the six-foot-four receiver Jack Heller. Jack Turner, Sam Gravitte and Will Bonaparte figure to be the primary running backs.

The Soccer Club of Ridgefield will stage its 28th annual Warm-Up Tournament on Sept. 3-4 (the rain date in Sept. 5).

The tournament is open to boys and girls travel teams from the U-9 through U-14 age divisions. All teams will play four games, two on each day.
