A week off did nothing to cool off the Ridgefield junior American Legion team, which defeated Windsor Locks 5-4 Sunday in the first round of the state tournament at Ciuccoli Field.

Starter Chip Papa allowed only two runs over five innings to earn the victory for 11th-seeded Ridgefield (21-7), which posted its 14th straight win.

Ridgefield will play at No. 6 Orange on Monday at 4:30 p.m. in the third round of the play-in tournament. The winner advances to the main Legion state tournament.

Members of the Legion Post 78 were in attendance Sunday and presented the color guard before the game in front a big crowd at Tiger Stadium.

Those in attendance saw Ridgefield fall behind 2-0, but after being held hitless through four innings, the home team came alive with four runs in the fifth. 

Jason Marra spoiled Windsor Locks' no-hit bid with a single up the middle. Chris McClelland added a two-run single and Timo Muro followed with a run-scoring single to make it 4-2.

Ridgefield tacked on an insurance run in the sixth, which proved to be the game-winner. Jeff Rohr, who retired the side in order in the sixth, gave up two runs in the seventh before getting the final out to secure the win.

So far, zone four teams are 4-0 in the postseason, as Norwalk (3-0 over Danbury South) and Trumbull (10-0 over Cheshire) also posted victories on Sunday.

All three, along with Stamford, which received a bye for winning the zone title, will be in action on Monday.

Ridgefield's Maria Maydan (women's double sculls) has been named to the U.S. Junior National Team that will compete in the 2011 World Rowing Junior Championships in Eton Dorney, Great Britain from Aug. 3-7.

World champions will be crowned in 13 events including the men’s single sculls, women’s single sculls, men’s double sculls, women’s double sculls, men’s quadruple sculls, women’s quadruple sculls, men’s pair, women’s pair, men’s four, women’s four, men’s four with coxswain, men’s eight and women’s eight.

At the 2010 World Rowing Junior Championships, the U.S. brought home a record four medals including gold in the men’s eight, silver in the women’s eight and women’s four, and bronze in the men’s single sculls.

Sisters Rosie Grinalds (women's pair) and Lucy Grinalds (women's four) of Southport also earned spots on the team.

The squad also includes three rowers from Westport: Max Meyer-Bosse and Alex Perkins in the men's eight) and Elizabeth Youngling in women's quadruple sculls.

Other local athletes named to the team are: New Canaan's Charlie Campbell and Weston's Graham Anderson in the men's sculls, and New Canaan's Jonathon Rosow (men's 4x) and Diedre Fitzpactrick (women's 8x).
