Three of the zone four teams who played Thursday in the quarterfinals of the American Legion junior state tournament advanced, including red-hot Ridgefield, which defeated No. 4 seed Bristol 8-4 at Danbury's Rogers Park for its 16th consecutive victory.

Also winning were No. 7 seed Trumbull, which posted a 2-1 win over No. 2 Southington in eight innings, and No. 3 Stamford, which ousted No. 6 West Hartford, 5-4.

The only zone four team to lose was No. 8 Norwalk, which fell to top seed Bethel, 7-2.

In the semifinals on Friday, Stamford takes on Trumbull at Veterans Field in Windsor Locks at 6 p.m. and Ridgefield (23-7) faces Bethel at Rogers Park, also at 6 p.m.

With three zone four teams in the semifinals, an area squad is guaranteed of reaching the final, which is set for Saturday at Muzzy Field in Bristol at 1 p.m.

Ridgefield's Maria Maydan (women's double sculls) has been named to the U.S. Junior National Team that will compete in the 2011 World Rowing Junior Championships in Eton Dorney, Great Britain from Aug. 3-7.

World champions will be crowned in 13 events including the men’s single sculls, women’s single sculls, men’s double sculls, women’s double sculls, men’s quadruple sculls, women’s quadruple sculls, men’s pair, women’s pair, men’s four, women’s four, men’s four with coxswain, men’s eight and women’s eight.

At the 2010 World Rowing Junior Championships, the U.S. brought home a record four medals including gold in the men’s eight, silver in the women’s eight and women’s four, and bronze in the men’s single sculls.

Sisters Rosie Grinalds (women's pair) and Lucy Grinalds (women's four) of Southport also earned spots on the team.

The squad also includes three rowers from Westport: Max Meyer-Bosse and Alex Perkins in the men's eight) and Elizabeth Youngling in women's quadruple sculls.

Other local athletes named to the team are: New Canaan's Charlie Campbell and Weston's Graham Anderson in the men's sculls, and New Canaan's Jonathon Rosow (men's 4x) and Diedre Fitzpactrick (women's 8x).
