Ridgefield's Benjamin Mines is a member of the Beachside Soccer Club's U-12 team, which defeated Holmdel of New Jersey on penalty kicks Tuesday morning in the finals of the U.S. Youth Soccer Region I championship in Lancaster, Pa.

After regulation and two overtime periods ended in a scoreless tie, Beachside outscored Holmdel NJX 5-4 on penalty kicks to advance to the nationals, which will take place in Phoenix from July 27-31.

Beachside had advanced to the Region I finals with a 3-0 victory over the Bayside Bolts of Rhode Island on Monday. Mines scored one of the goals.

Beachside also had boys teams in the regionals in the U-15, U-16 and U-17 divisions, but none made it past pool play.

The U-12 team is comprised of players from throughout the region, including Norwalk, Fairfield, Westport, Ridgefield and Trumbull. Alexander Hedegaard led Beachside in the tournament with two goals.

Beachside's roster also included Tyler Dalton, George Kutrubis, Alex Carbonnier, Jon Paul Fernandez, Sawyer Kindel, Ben McNamara, Oscar Pereira, Dylan Middlebrook, William Trudeau, Thomas Nealon, James Roland, Ryan Ruff and Charlie Teeters, Julio Cesar Palencia and Westport's Joe Pravder.

Ridgefield National dropped to 1-2 in pool play in the District One 12-year-old Little League tournament following Tuesday's 9-1 loss to Darien National at Wilton's Bill Terry Field (5:30 p.m.).

Ridgefield American improved to 2-2 with a 10-9 win Stamford Northrop. Each team has two games remaining in pool play, which continues through Sunday.

-- Ridgefield is hosting the U-15 Babe Ruth District Four tournament this week with a berth in the state tournament on the line.

Ridgefield received a bye in the first round and defeated Pomperaug 7-6 in the winner's bracket semifinals on Friday.

Ridgefield will play again on Wednesday at Ciuccoli Field at 5 p.m. in the winner's bracket final. The championship game is set for Saturday.
