-- The Ridgefield Post 78 U-17 Legion baseball team participated in the preseason Sonny Blank Memorial tournament in Frederick, Maryland over the Memorial Day weekend.
The team went 1-3, losing in the bottom of the seventh twice. Joe Malley picked up the complete game win in a 12-3 victory against Gathiersburg Post 104.
Jason Marra, Adam Zandri and Colin Virag had key doubles to break open the game in the fifth. Ryan Debany and Christian Oconnell also had key hits
Against Gathiersburg Post 295, Ridgefield pitchers Colin Virag, Matt Johnson, Joe Ammirato, and Christian Oconnell held the opponent scoreless until two outs in the seventh when the Maryland team scored four times to earn the victory.
Against Frederick, Dan Greenberg pitched four innings, alllowing three earned runs and scattering five hits. Chip Papa pitched two innings in relief, giving up one run.
Ridgefield led 7-6 in the bottom of the seventh, thanks to three runs scored by Jason Marra, a double by John Mullery and key hits from Zandri and Virag. Kevin Ash also had an RBI.
In the final game, Ridgefield was defeated by Brunswick, Md, 22-3. Jack Brewster, Virag, Ammirato, Zandri and Oconnell could not slow the powerful team which featured several all-county high school players.
Marra, Mike Kim and Zandri all had hits which had given Ridgefield an early 3-1 lead. Other players who participated were Jack Boscia, Jeremy Gordon and Kyle Ford.
