In future years, the CIAC should do away with the formalities and eliminate all non-FCIAC teams from the state lacrosse tournaments.

Just cut to the chase and conduct an FCIAC invitational. One can argue whether the FCIAC is the best league in the state in other sports. When it comes to lacrosse, there is no debate.

The FCIAC once again is proving, as it does every year, that it is far and away the premier league for lacrosse in Connecticut.

Twelve FCIAC teams are still alive, six on the boys' side and six on the girls' side. The breakdown:

Boys (semifinalists):

L -- Ridgefield and Staples
M - Darien, Wilton, New Canaan
S -- St. Joseph.

With Ridgefield facing Staples and Darien meeting Wilton, the FCIAC is guaranteed to have two teams in the state  finals. St. Joseph, which has played in the Class S final the last two years, could make it three.

Girls (quarterfinalists):

L -- Fairfield Ludlowe, Staples and Greenwich
M - Wilton, New Canaan and Darien

The seeding, of course, mean nothing. There have been three cases where double-digit FCIAC teams have won games.

On the boys' side,  No. 12 Greenwich defeated No. 5 Glastonbury, 12-10, and No. 12 St. Joseph defeated No. 5 and defending state champion Weston, 8-6.

Maybe the most telling score was the Darien girls' 22-4 romp over No. 4 Barlow as a No. 13 seed. These results are technically upsets but there aren't really.

There have been 12 cases where FCIAC teams won games by a margin of double figures:

Boys, Class L( 4): Staples 15, South Windsor 4; McMahon 16, Hamden 2; Ridgefield 20, Norwich Free Academy 6; Ridgefield 17, Conard 5

Boys, Class M (4): Darien 17, Notre Dame, West Haven 2; Wilton 19, Windsor 4; New Canaan 15, Hand 3; Wilton 13, Guilford 1

Girls, Class L (1): Staples 19, Southington 9

Girls, Class M (3): Darien 22, Barlow 4; Wilton 19, Bethel 7; New Canaan 17, Windsor 5

-- Ridgefield still has two teams alive in the postseason - boys volleyball and boys lacrosse.

The boys volleyball team (17-4) next will be in action on Tuesday, when it faces top seed Cheshire in the semifinals of the CIAC Class L tournament at Shelton (7 p.m.)

The winner of that game will face either Staples or Southington in the finals. Staples and Southington clash in the opener of a doubleheader at Shelton at 5 p.m. on Tuesday.

The boys lacrosse team (16-5) , which routed Conard 17-5 on Saturday, faces FCIAC rival Staples in the Class L semifinals on Wednesday at a site and time to be determined.

-- Ridgefield's Arnaud Valentin, the No. 10 seed, has reached the third round of the Class LL state tournament. He will face No. 8 Jeremy Shuskus of Hall.

The third-round matches will be played at Hall on Monday starting at 1:30 p.m. followed by the quarterfinals.

So far, Greenwich leads the team competition with 18 points, one ahead of Staples. Glastonbury is third with 13 points, followed by Ridgefield, Westhill and Fairfield Prep, who are tied for fourth with 11 points.
