After not making the FCIAC playoffs, the Ridgefield girls soccer team pulled off major surprises in the first two rounds of the Class LL state tournament, defeating No. 8 West Haven (3-1) and No. Greenwich (2-0), the reigning FCIAC champion.
Facing top seed Glastonbury in the quarterfinals on Tuesday, however, was another matter as the 25th-ranked Tigers suffered a 3-1 loss to end their season at 7-7-5.
Glastonbury advanced to the semifinals to face Staples, another FCIAC squad that is making a surprising run after missing the league playoffs.
The 20th-seeded Wreckers upset Westhill 2-1 on Tuesday, ending the Wreckers' hopes of reaching the state final for the third consecutive season.
The Ridgefield girls volleyball team won't get another crack at Darien.
The Tigers, who fell to Darien in the FCIAC finals, suffered a 3-0 (26-24, 25-11 and 25-18) loss at fourth-seeded Southington in the quarterfinals of the Class LL state tournament on Tuesday.
Fifth-seeded Ridgefield finished its season with a 19-4 record.
