The Ridgefield football team gets a jump start on the local holiday schedule as the Tigers host Danbury in its regular-season finale on Wednesday (7 p.m.) at Tiger Hallow.
The contest shapes up as the Tigers' biggest in nearly a decade as they have a chance to end a nine-year state playoff drought. Ridgefield's second - and most recent - postseason appearance came in 2002.

The Tigers have come close in recent years, but they haven't been able to break though.
A victory over the Hatters wouldn't clinch a playoff spot, but it would put the Tigers (7-2) in a favorable position because of bonus points available in other games around the state that affect the rankings.

Shelton and Pomperaug (which esscaped with a 10-7 win over Oxford on Tuesday) are tied for eighth in the Class LL rankings with 940 points, just 10 ahead of Ridgefield and Glastonbury, who are tied for 10th. Norwich Free Academy is at 910. The Tigers appear to have the more favorable schedule.
Ridgefield also would benefit if McMahon (3-6) upsets Norwalk (8-1), which is sixth Class LL, or if No. 7 Greenwich (8-1) loses to Staples (8-0) in the FCIAC championship game on Thursday.
The first order of business, of course, is beating the Hatters (5-4), and that won't be easy.
Ridgefield will try to contain Danbury running back James "Speedy" Harrington, who has been a handful for opponents all season. Harrington is the FCIAC's leading rusher with 1,022 yards and 19 touchdowns on 133 carries. He is averaging nearly eight yards per carry and also leads the league in scoring with 128 points.
Harrington will be looking to bounce back after being held to 51 yards in a 17-7 loss to Greenwich on Nov. 10.
In addition, Danbury fullback Austin Calitro has verbally committed to Villanova.
For Ridgefield Connor Rowe has passed for 1,706 yards, the second-best mark in the FCIAC behind New Canaan's Matt Milano.
Rowe's favorite target is Jack Heller, who is No. 2 in the FCIAC in receiving yards with 544.
Sam Gravitte paces the Tigers on the ground with 510 yards rushing yards and has scored a combined 13 rushing and receiving touchdowns. He also serves as the Tigers' kicker and is third in the FCIAC in scoring with 103 points.
Ridgefield defeated Danbury 27-14 last season. The teams will be meeting for only the 10th time with the Tigers holding a 6-3 lead.
