The Ridgefield football team clinched its first state playoff berth in nine years with room to spare

The Tigers, who routed Danbury 56-14 on Wednesday to finish the regular season at 8-2, secured the No. 7 seed and will face FCIAC rival Staples, the No. 2 seed, in the quarterfinals on Tuesday. The teams did not play each other during the regular season.

Staples completed a 9-0 regular season by rallying for a 31-27 victory over Greenwich in the FCIAC championship game on Thursday. The Wreckers erased a 10-point deficit in the final seven minutes.

The Staples-Ridgefield winner with each either No. 3 Hall (9-1) or No. 6 Newtown (8-2) in the semifinals.

In the other quarterfinals, top seed Xavier (10-0), the No. 1 ranked team in the state, hosts No. 8 Glastonbury (8-2) and No. 4 Conard (9-1) hosts No. 5 Norwalk (8-1), one of FCIAC teams to make the state playoffs.

New Canaan (9-1) also qualified in Class L after defeating Darien 42-21 Thursday for its ninth straight win over the Blue Wave.
