The Ridgefield eighth grade girls field hockey team opened its season Saturday with a 4-1 win over Wilton at Ridgefield High School.
For the past two years, Ridgefield's teams have dominated in the regular season and the final tournament, winning a number of close contests.

The squad came out ready to play in this year's opener with another strong performance, taking control early with four straight goals, which were scored by three different players.
Wilton scored its only goal late in the second half. Ridgefield is back in action next week at New Canaan.

Ridgefield's 8B team also hosted Wilton at the RHS grass field on Saturday and lost 2-1, but showed a valiant effort considering this squad is comprised of seventh- and eighth-grade girls who have never played field hockey before.
They unit is coached by Lucy Gil, who recently relocated from Pennsylvania with her family. Gil was a varsity field Hockey coach for Wissahickon High School and brings 18 years of coaching experience to her team.
Ridgefield's seventh grade team traveled to Wilton on Sunday and lost 4-1 under the lights on the turf.
However, Grace Courtney was superb in goal with more than 20 savess She had help from Maggie Senesac, who showed solid defensive stickhandling in the circle. Ridgefield is coached by Isabel Caporale.
Ridgefield's sixth grade team plays their first game in Danbury on Saturday. It is coached by Judy Silver, who has a daughter on the 8A team and the sixth grade grade team and has helped grow the program.
Finally, Ridgefield's House League meets on Sunday afternoons and players learn the game in a clinic format. More than 30 girls from grades three through five have signed up for the program.
