The girls basketball team needed to win its final two games to clinch a state tournament berth.

The Tigers (7-12, 7-10) accomplished the first part of that equation on Monday with a 63-50 victory over Fairfield Ludlowe. They will try to achieve the second part on Wednesday when they host Staples (7 p.m.) in their final game of the regular season.

Staples (11-8, 10-7) enters the contest in a four-way tie for seventh in the FCIAC standings with Stamford, Fairfield Warde and Darien.

The Wreckers still have an outside chance to make the FCIAC playoffs but, assuming a win over Ridgefield, they need Darien to somehow lose to winless Bassick, which seems highly unlikely.

Staples is coming of a bizarre 50-47 win over Greenwich as the Wreckers had to hold on after opening a 19-0 lead after the first quarter and a 30-11 lead at halftime.

The Ridgefield boys (14-3, 12-3) will be looking to rebound from Monday's 47-45 upset loss to Fairfield Ludlowe when they visit Staples on Wednesday (7 p.m.).

The Wreckers almost defeated Greenwich on the road Monday before falling, 41-40. Staples (8-9, 7-8) is one game out of a playoff spot in the FCIAC standings.

Despite losing to Darien 4-2 on Saturday, the Ridgefield boys hockey team is still ranked ahead of the Blue Wave in the New Haven Register top 10 state media poll.

The Tigers (14-2), who had won 14 in a row before the loss to the Blue Wave, dropped only one spot. Darien (12-3), which has won 11 in a row, climbed two spots.

Fairfield Prep (14-2), which is undefeated against state opponents this season, held on to the top spot, once again collecting all 15 first-place votes.

Notre Dame of West Haven (12-3-1) jumped one spot to No. 2 while Hamden (8-3-2) slipped one spot to fifth.

Glastonbury (12-3) is sixth, followed by Xavier (8-7-1), West Haven (9-5), East Haven (11-4-2) and South Windsor (9-7).

Among other FCIAC teams, New Canaan (10-6-1) is 11th and St. Joseph (11-6) 13th.
