The St. Mary’s seventh grade girls basketball team moved a step closer to claiming the unofficial title of state champs this past weekend, completing its Fairfield County regular season with a 17-0 record and moving up to the eighth grade division for the playoffs.
In addition to their FCBL games, the girls traveled outside the county to face off against some of the best teams in the area.

Thanks to Sean Wilkinson, the Ridgefield High School boys hockey team had no trouble bouncing back from its loss to Darien.
Wilkinson scored a hat trick on Wednesday as the Tigers routed Trumbull 6-1 at the Winter Garden Arena to move back into a first-place tie with the Blue Wave.
It was the 15th win in 16 games for Ridgefield, which improved to 15-2 overall and 9-1 in the FCIAC. Last Saturday's 4-2 loss to Darien snapped the Tigers' 14-game winning streak.
Timmy Kelly scored two two goals and Corey Dunn had one for the Tigers, who are back in action on Saturday at Staples-Weston-Shelton at 8 p.m. at the Milford Ice Pavilion.
While Ridgefield and Darien share the top spot in the FCIAC standings, the race for the final four playoff spots is a tight one.
St. Joseph (8-3) is third with 16 points and New Canaan (7-3), Trinity Catholic (7-3) and Wilton (7-3) are all tied for fourth with 14 points.
Fairfield (6-4) is seventh with 12 points and still in contention for one of the top six spots under the FCIAC's new postseason format.
A once-promising season for Staples-Weston-Shelton has deterioated as the Wreckers have been decimated by injuries.
The Wreckers, who have dressed as few as 10 skaters for some games, have dropped nine in a row following a 6-1 start and are coming off Wednesday's 4-3 defeat to Stamford.
