The boys basketball team avenged a loss to Stamford in last year's FCIAC quarterfinals by defeating the sixth-seeded Black Knights 50-46 Saturday afternoon in the first of four quarterfinal games at Fairfield Ludlowe.

Kurt Steidl scored 19 points and grabbed eight rebounds for the third-seeded Tigers, who lost lost to Stamford 39-31 in last year's playoff meetin.

Ridgefield improved 16-5 and will take on No. 2 seed Trinity Catholic at 5 p.m. Tuesday at Fairfied Prep. The Crusaders advanced with a 62-56 win over No. 7 Danbury.

Jeff Racy added 12 points for Ridgefield, which outscored Stamford 13-7 in the third quarter to take a 33-28 lead into the fourth quarter.

The Tigers, who also avenged a 50-39 loss to Stamford in the regular season, built a 44-32 lead with two minutes remaining.

Barry Boderick scored 12 points and Shawn Padilla added 11 for the Black Knights, who will take a 12-9 record into the Class LL state tournament.

Boderick, who registered 16 points in the regular-season win over Ridgefield, was held to three points on Saturday until making three 3-pointers in the final two minutes

Ridgefield's Matthew Philbin finishes fifth in the 126-pound weight class at the state Open wrestling championships in New Haven on Saturday.

He earned fifth place when his opponent -- Matthew Trelli of Bristol Central defaulted with an injury.
