Ridgefield Teen Organizes National School Walkout

The movement urges students to walk out of class April 20 in response to school shootings.

RIDGEFIELD, CT — Ridgefield High School student Lane Murdock is behind the petition that calls for students to walk out of class April 20 in solidarity for those who have been hurt or killed in school shootings.

April 20 is the 19th anniversary of the Columbine school shooting. The petition asks participants to wear orange, the color hunters wear on their vests to warn other hunters not to shoot, according to the Hartford Courant.

The change.org petition has more than 94,000 signatures as of Wednesday morning.

"We are the students, we are the victims, we are change, fight gun violence now! High School students across the U.S.A, the way to fight back is here," she wrote in the petition. "There has been too much complacency on the part of politicians when it comes to gun violence. The time to act is now!"

Murdock said that school shootings have become a normal part of reality for her generation.

"Nothing has changed since Columbine, let us start a movement that lets the government know the time for change is now," she wrote in the petition.
