Ridgefield, Towns Threatening Legal Action Against State: Report

Part of the Governor's proposed budget may be in violation of state statutes and bond covenants made by the state, says the towns.

RIDGEFIELD, CT — In light of the Governor's plan to shift 1/3 of the teacher's pension costs to municipalities, several towns have joined Ridgefield to threaten legal action against the state if the plan is adopted, reports the News Times.

Commissioned by Ridgefield First Selectman Rudy Marconi, a legal brief concluded that the plan likely violates state statute and bond covenants made by the state. Malloy's budget proposal presented in February not only would cut significant state aid to towns such as Ridgefield, but would add the cost of the teachers pension's, forcing several towns like Ridgefield to ow the state for the costs.

The Connecticut Council of Small Towns (Cost) is urging state lawmakers to take the issue off the table.
