ROCKY HILL, CT — Here are some recent notable accomplishments by local college students, as provided by readMedia Newswire.

Eastern Connecticut State University, Willimantic CT

  • Eastern Connecticut State University psychology students presented research posters at the Association for Women in Psychology (AWP) national conference in Newport, RI, from Feb. 28 - March 3. They presented alongside Eastern Psychology Professors Jennifer Leszczynski and Alita Cousins. One of the students who presented research was Alyssa Sokaitis of Rocky Hill, who majors in Psychology. The title of the presentation was"Feminist Identity and Liberal Feminist Attitudes and Beliefs." The paper analyzed how self-identified feminists differed from those who did not self-identify as feminists. The study found that those who self-identify as feminists were more likely to endorse liberal feminist attitudes and describe feminists as liberal rather than radical.
  • The Theatre Program at Eastern Connecticut State University presented "The Wolves" as its first production of the spring 2019 semester. Running from Feb. 27-March 3 in the DelMonte Studio Theatre, "The Wolves" is a coming-of-age story that takes place on the turf of a local indoor soccer field. Among those who made the production a success was Hannah Garrahy of Rocky Hill, who majors in Communication and Theatre. The play was performed by an all-female cast, directed by Theatre Professor Kristen Morgan and written by award-winning playwright Sarah DeLappe. Garrahy played the role of soccer player #8.
  • The men's basketball team at Eastern Connecticut State University concluded its 2018-2019 season with a record of 20-7. Among the student athletes was Nicholas Casiano of Rocky Hill, who majors in Psychology and plays guard. Casiano's jersey number was 14. The men's basketball team made it to the LEC Championship game, coming second to Keene State College with a score of 72-69. Despite the loss, they won 13 LEC games, earned two LEC tournament titles and accomplished their ninth year winning 20 games in one season.

Emmanuel College, Boston MA

  • During the week of March 4th, Gianna Kittle of Rocky Hill was one of eight Emmanuel College students who participated in the College's annual Alternative Spring Break (ASB) trip to New Orleans, Louisiana. ASB is a week-long, faith-based service trip held during the College's traditional spring break that bridges volunteer work with education and reflection on larger social issues. The group spent the week working with SBP (formerly the St. Bernard Project), a nonprofit, disaster relief organization that is helping rebuild the homes of residents still recovering from the effects of Hurricane Katrina. The organization has rebuilt nearly 700 homes for residents in the New Orleans area since 2006.

Saint Michael's College, Colchester VT

  • Junior Julia Sevigny of Rocky Hill returns to the Saint Michael's softball team. Last season, the outfielder started all 35 games, collecting 14 hits and eight walks.
