Established in June 1996 joining the towns of Rocky Hill and Wethersfield, the district further expanded to include the towns of Berlin in June 1998 and Newington in July 2006. For 25 years, CCHD has been committed to our mission of ‘improving the quality of life within our communities through the prevention of disease & injury, the fostering of a healthy environment, and the promotion of our resident’s health’.
In recognition of our agency’s milestone, we are proud to debut our commemorative logo. A reimagining of Public Health’s iconic shield, the design both embodies the ‘25’ years within the shield’s architecture, as well as defining our ‘Healthy People in a Healthy Community’ vision by placing the individual at the heart of our determination.

CCHD is operated by a 12 person staff and is governed by a 13 member Board of Health, functioning as an independent entity of government. The size of district boards of health is directly related to its population, appointing one representative from each municipality, with an additional representative appointed for every 10,000 residents within a municipality’s population (maximum of 5 representatives).
CCHD is one of 64 local health agencies serving Connecticut’s decentralized public health infrastructure. Connecticut’s 169 towns are organized into 44 (34 fulltime | 10 parttime) independent municipal departments of health and 20 districts of health, with jurisdictions spanning from 2 to 20 towns. Governed by Connecticut General Statutes (CGS) Sections 19a-200 through 19a-239 (municipal) and 19a-240 through 19a-249 (districts), local health agencies are tasked with the responsibility of enforcing Connecticut’s Public Health Code, as well as mandated services as prescribed by CGS Section 368e (municipal) and Section 368f (district). Each local health agency ensures the provision of a basic health program pursuant to CGS Section 19a-207a.
As we transition out of one of the most challenging years in humanity’s history, join us in championing our agency’s latest milestone, as together we forge a path into the future.
