On April 21, at the request of the state's attorney's office, state police detectives assumed the investigation, according to the initial case report.

The matter appeared to be an isolated incident and there was never a threat to the public or community, state police said.

The off-duty firefighter was later identified as Jimmy Ngo, who authorities said was shot six times — five in the back and one time in the face. Police also said the person who called 911 to report the shooting was someone Ngo knew.

Police said they located Ngo inside a building in the complex.
