Mother, Son Killed After Car Crashes Into Housatonic River
Search and rescue teams found the car about 75 yards from shore, but not in time to save the motorists.
SEYMOUR, CT — A mother and son from Monroe were killed when their vehicle crashed into the Housatonic River on Friday, according to media reports including the Monroe Sun.
Connie Crowell, 54, and her son Jack, 22, were both killed as a result of the crash.
Emergency responders were called to the area of Roosevelt Drive around 3:45 p.m. Friday. Search and rescue teams found the car about 75 yards from shore but were unable to rescue the couple before it became fully submerged with the victims still buckled inside, WTNH News 8 reports.

The Monroe Sun reports that resuscitation efforts were attempted at the scene but were unsuccessful. The cause of the accident is under investigation.
Connie Crowell was well known in the Monroe community as she was a part of Alcohol and Drug Awareness of Monroe (ADAM), which helped to ensure young people remained sober, the Monroe Sun reports. Crowell was a long-time volunteer in the Monroe Public Schools. Jack Crowell graduated from Masuk High in 2017.

"The purpose of ADAM is to heighten the awareness of Monroe’s residents about the dangers of alcohol and drug use and to encourage a community lifestyle free of substance abuse. ADAM raises community awareness of substance abuse and available support services by working with schools and community agencies on substance abuse related issues," according to ADAM's website.
NBC Connecticut reports that firefighters used a private boat to help in their rescue efforts. More than 75 firefighters responded and one firefighter suffered minor injuries. Police told NBC CT that they believe this was an accident and hope to release more information at a later time.
