22 Property Owners Appealing Their Assessment

A total of 22 Shelton property owners are taking their case to the city's Board of Assessment Appeals.

"It's low," Assessor Bill Gaffney says of that number, in comparison to past years.

The Board of Assessment Appeals held its final of two meetings last night in City Hall, and no decisions have been made on those property owners' appeals.

The Board is still working on scheduling a date on which it would meet to act on the appeals. While that meeting will be open to the public and, in particular, those who have appealed, no one has ever showed up to one during Gaffney's 30 years in the Assessor's Office.

The City last did a revaluation on Oct. 1, 2011, after which time the current mill rate of 22.40 was set. "Ninety percent of residential property owners saw a drop in taxes after the mill rate was set," Gaffney said.

The 2013-14 budget is still a work in progress and, therefore, a new mill rate has not yet been determined.
