Update: More Shelton Prom Dresses Labeled 'Inappropriate'
Students affected by the issues voiced their opinions on social media describing the selective nature of the dress code.

Administrators have reviewed 100 prom dresses at Shelton High School, of which 15 have been labelled ’inappropriate,’ Fox CT reports.
Another three gowns were tabled for more information.
According to Fox, a few more requests came in for review after school on Tuesday.

At a press conference on Monday, Superintendent of Schools Dr. Freeman Burr said the issue had been blown out of proportion adding that the announcement made on Friday was to remind students of the dress code that has been outlined in the student handbook.
The handbook only considers what is appropriate in a school situation and does not specifically apply to prom. Burr added that the issue was raised by some faculty, staff and male students.
Burr further said the administration understands there is a difference between school and prom attire but would only accept prom attire that was appropriate, the news channel reports.
The announcement on Friday at Shelton High School regarding appropriate dress code at the prom left students angry.
According to NBC Connecticut, the announcement made by headmaster Dr. Beth Smith said backless dresses or those with slits or cut-outs will not be allowed.
Many students were upset with the timing of the announcement as prom is this Saturday, the news channel reports. Students said they had already purchased dresses and it would be too late for them to return the dresses.
Students have planned on passing around a petition regarding the enforcement of the dress code.
The petition points to the sexist attitude the dress code enforcement portrays. It states, “There is a sexist and backwards logic that girls must cover up so that boys are not distracted or tempted to behave inappropriately. If a girl wears a pair of shorts and a boy takes that as an invitation to touch her, who really needs to be told to control themselves? Don’t teach girls to hide their bodies; teach boys self control and that they aren’t entitled to a girl’s body just because she dressed in a way that made her feel beautiful or just didn’t want to get overheated.”
The prom dress code issue has gained national media attention and was covered in the New York Times.
