Hewitt Center for Breast Wellness at Griffin Hospital Designated a Breast Imaging Center of Excellence

The Hewitt Center for Breast Wellness at Griffin Hospital has been designated a Breast Imaging Center of Excellence by the American College of Radiology (ACR).

In awarding the status of a “Breast Imaging Center of Excellence,” the ACR recognizes that The Hewitt Center for Breast Wellness demonstrates excellence in breast imaging by successfully earning accreditation in mammography, stereotactic breast biopsy, and breast ultrasound (including ultrasound-guided breast biopsy). Accreditation in breast MRI imaging was also achieved by Griffin Hospital and The Griffin Imaging & Diagnostics Center at Ivy Brook in Shelton.

“We are extremely thrilled and proud to be designated as a Breast Imaging Center of Excellence,” said Christine Cooper, MS, CNMT, director of Radiology/Cardiology. “The Center has been working toward this goal for more than 18 months. This accreditation represents the hard work of our staff and our commitment to meeting exceptional breast imaging standards for our patients.”

To achieve this distinguished designation, The Center underwent peer-review evaluations by board-certified physicians and medical physicists who are experts in the field for each breast imaging method. The evaluations determined that The Center has achieved high practice standards in image quality, personnel qualifications, facility equipment, quality control procedures, and quality assurance programs.

The ACR is a national professional organization serving more than 34,000 diagnostic/interventional radiologists, radiation oncologists, nuclear medicine physicians, and medical physicists with programs focusing on the practice of medical imaging and radiation oncology and the delivery of comprehensive healthcare services.

Opened in January of 2011, The Hewitt Center for Breast Wellness at Griffin Hospital, 350 Seymour Ave. in Derby, combines state-of-the-art technology, a team of highly trained physicians and staff, and a Planetree healing environment to offer our patients a comprehensive range of personalized breast care and wellness services. The Center features two new, state-of-the-art digital mammography suites, a breast ultrasound suite, and the most advanced system available to perform stereotactic biopsy.
