Beth Smith Named Interim Shelton Superintendent

Smith was previously the principal of Shelton High School and most recently supervised special education and pupil services.

SHELTON, CT — Former Shelton High School Principal Beth Smith was named interim superintendent after Superintendent Chris Clouet announced he will depart the district at the end of this month.

Smith currently supervises special education and pupil services. The Board of Education vote to name Smith was along party lines with Republicans supporting it and Democrats wanting assistant superintendent Ken Saranich to serve in the position instead, according to the Shelton Herald.

Smith was placed on leave after police opened an investigation into the handling of a alleged sexual assault that involved two students. Police sought an arrest warrant for Smith, but the state's attorney office declined to prosecute. Smith filed a grievance over her transfer to the special education and pupil services position and eventually settled with the Board of Education.
