Former Shelton Principal Settles With BOE Over Job Assignment

Former Shelton High principal Beth Smith reached an agreement with the Board of Education over her transfer.

SHELTON, CT — Former Shelton High School principal Beth Smith and the Board of Education reached a settlement over her reassignment to the supervisor of special education position.

Smith filed a grievance and contended that the move was effectively a demotion because she had less authority, less salary and a lower classification under the union bargaining agreement, according to the Shelton Herald.

Eventually the two sides settled and Smith's new position is being labeled as a promotion and will get annual 2.8 percent administrator pay raises, which is what she would have gotten as principal.

Smith was placed on leave after police opened an investigation into the handling of a alleged sexual assault that involved two students. Police sought an arrest warrant for Smith, but the state's attorney office declined to prosecute.
