Where the Frogs Are
My book, "The Signs of Connecticut," is a chronicle of those familiar blue signs that have the names of Connecticut's towns on them.
Have you ever heard of Thread City? Well, it's in Willimantic Connecticut. How about the Frog Bridge? Well that's located here as well.
You have probably heard more about Willimantic, more than its parent town of Windham. You see Willimantic is what Huntington is to Shelton, to some sorts.

Now, if you have been there have you ever noticed all the frogs around town? How about the frogs that are placed on spools of threads that are placed as statues on one of the bridges downtown?
I am sure you have seen them in passing. The story behind the frogs and the spools of thread are all apart of the town's history but are not connected.

First, the thread story. In the 19th century the town had many cotton mills along it's river that produced high quality thread. The story behind the frogs goes back to the French Indian War. One night the townspeople thought the Indians were attacking.
That night, spooky sounds from the woods put all the townspeople on edge. It was the thought, the sounds were the Indian's battle cry. When dawn came the sounds finally subsided and went away. It was discovered that near town a large amount of frogs had died in a dried out pond. The noises heard that night before were the frogs crying out for help.
So there goes the story behind the infamous Frog Bridge of Willimantic, or is it Windham? Either way there are many more stories behind Willimantic, but you can find out so much by just crossing the Frog Bridge. If you ever go here, be sure to bring your camera to view one of Connecticut's most unique towns and bridges.
Hop to it and see you there.
