How Does Shelton Compare to Other Communities in Connecticut?
Connecticut Magazine ranks all 169 communities in the state based on five core categories, grouping them together based on median household.

SHELTON, CT - Connecticut Magazine has come out with its annual “Rating the Towns” list. The ratings, published in its November issue, group the state’s many communities by median home value, ranking towns that have similar resources.
The magazine explains that in the past, when they rated towns by population, a city like Bridgeport was being measured against a town like Greenwich, which in reality are two very different communities.

Now, how did Shelton fare when compared to similar communities? For starters, the city is grouped with communities where the median home value is between $250,000-$325,000 or more with that value being $303,100 for Shelton. A total of 38 towns made it into this category.

The best possible rating in each category is 1 and the worst is 38.
Here’s how Shelton was ranked in the following categories:
- Leisure and Culture: 19
- Economy: 24
- Crime: 29
- Civic Engagement: 38
- Education: 34
The magazine notes, “The bottom five of this grouping are Bethel, Milford, Shelton, Prospect and North Haven, which have a combined population of nearly 150,000. These towns may not “rate” highly, but clearly there are tens of thousands who happily call each home. ”
