James J. McGrath of Ansonia passed into the perpetual radiance of our Lord’s presence on Sept. 23, 2022. His family takes great solace in knowing that he is reunited with his adored wife, June, who predeceased him. He was a remarkable human being who had an enduring love of God, family, friends and his country. He was born in1925 to the late James and Mary McGrath. At the age of 17, he voluntarily enlisted in the Navy to fight in WWII and proudly served his country. After the war, he graduated from Arnold College. He then found his true calling as a police officer--a profession that he truly loved. He worked as a CT state trooper for 30 years before retiring with the rank of Captain. He enjoyed the comradery and deep friendships that he formed within the State Police. He also enjoyed the opportunities to train with various agencies including the Canadian Mounted Police in Saskatchewan, Canada and the FBI in Quantico, Virginia. His family fondly recalls going to the White House ceremony, presided over by President Richard Nixon, at the culmination of his FBI training. After retiring from the State Police, he became Chief of Police of Ansonia and served in that capacity for 27 years. He had immense pride and respect for the Ansonia Police officers who proudly protected and served the community that was so important to him. Having grown up in Ansonia, he seemed to know everyone, as well as their parents, children and friends. He had a remarkable smile, always took the time to listen to others, and was always there to help others when needed. He was the kind of loyal friend that everyone should have. His family relishes the many memories that he created. His survivors include his children, James (Fran) McGrath of North Haven, June Kelly of Fairfield and Janice (Daniel) O’Brien of Fairfield, his 12 loving grandchildren, 8 wonderful great-grandchildren and his dear sister, Mildred Tyma of Ansonia. He was predeceased by his wife, June, his cherished sisters, Anna Mae Hallaman, Helen Ennis, Sarah (Sadie) Kingston, Kathyrn Foehr, his brother, Stephen McGrath, and several nephews and nieces. Many thanks to his family and friends who offered prayers and thoughtful remembrances.
