Criminal Charges To Be Filed Against Driver In Fatal Seymour Crash: Update

The crash occurred Tuesday night on Rimmon Street, killing Derby resident Shyheim Samuel, 20; 5 others were injured and remain hospitalized.

SEYMOUR, CT — Derby resident Shyheim Samuel, 20, has been identified by police as the person who was killed in Tuesday night's fatal crash in Seymour, reports WTNH-TV's Brian Spyros.

In addition to Samuel, the one-vehicle crash on Rimmon Street in Seymour seriously injured 5 other teens riding in the vehicle, reports the Danbury News-Times.

Samuel, who turned 20 this week writes the Connecticut Post, was not driving and is believed to have been a passenger in the right rear of the vehicle, a four-door sedan which flipped over onto its roof.

The Valley Independent Sentinel reports that Seymour police will pursue criminal charges against the driver of the car.

Samuel was a former student in the Derby School System, as was one of the other occupants in the car. That person remains hospitalized. Derby Schools Superintendent Matthew Conway has met with the families, according to the publication.

The crash occurred at about 9:30 p.m., and police believe speed was a factor, reports Fox61 News. The injured occupants in the vehicle are believed to be 18 years old or younger, and their identities have not been released.

In addition to the fatality, some of the injured, who are hospitalized throughout the region, reportedly were considered to be in life-threatening conditions, but they have been upgraded, according to Spyros.

According to police, the vehicle slammed into a utility pole, splitting it into multiple pieces and exposing live wires. Rimmon Street was temporarily closed early Wednesday while crews repaired the downed pole.
